Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Medicare Part C, offers the same benefits as Original Medicare but includes additional benefits such as dental, vision, and hearing coverage. Medicare Advantage plans are issued by private insurance organizations that are approved by Medicare.

There are several types of Medicare Advantage plans you can enroll in.

HMO Plans

HMO Plans, or Health Maintenance Organization Plans, include a network of providers, doctors, and hospitals. With HMOs, you may be required to choose a primary care physician, and receive a referral to see a specialist. Also, if you receive care outside of the network, you will not be covered.

These plans offer lower premiums compared to PPO Plans.

PPO Plans

PPO Plans, or Preferred Provider Organization Plans, also have a network of providers, doctors, and hospitals. However, unlike HMOs, PPOs do not always require you to receive care within the network. PPOs also do not require you to choose a primary care physician or receive referrals.

MSA Plans

MSA Plans, or Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans, include a high deductible plan and savings account that goes toward paying your medical costs. After you pay the high deductible, your coverage will begin. As for the savings account, the plan provider will deposit funds into the account each year. These funds can go towards paying on the deductible.

MSA Plans also have provider networks, but they also cover out-of-network care.

PFFS Plans

PFFS Plans, or Private Fee-For-Service Plans, do not require you to choose a primary care physician or receive referrals to see specialists. The plan may or may not also have a network, but you can still typically receive out-of-network care. However, with PFFS Plans, the insurance company chooses how much it will pay the healthcare provider, and how much you pay for the health services.

SNPs

SNPs, or Special Needs Plans, are limited to individuals with specific disabilities or illnesses. The three types of SNPs include Chronic-Condition (C-SNP), Dual-Eligible (D-SNP), and Institutional (I-SNP). All SNPs are required to provide coverage, and you will more than likely have to choose a primary care physician.
