Medicare Supplement Plans are private insurance plans that supplement Original Medicare. Also called Medigap, these insurance amplifiers fill the gaps in costs left behind by Original Medicare through 10 standardized plans. The costs that Medicare Supplements cover include deductibles, coinsurance, copayments, excess charges, foreign travel care, and the first three pints of blood for transfusions.

All Medicare Supplement policies in 2020 are labeled A through N. Each plan offers the same standardized coverage regardless of the insurance organization that issues it. For example, the basic benefits in a Plan D policy administered by one insurer must be the same with a Plan D policy offered by another. And though the plan is standardized, rates may vary from insurer to insurer.

When to enroll?

When a beneficiary initially enrolls in Medicare Part B, they are allowed six months to buy a Medigap plan without the insurance company prying into their Medicare history to decide whether to provide coverage. When this time window closes, the beneficiary will have to undergo medical underwriting and answer a medical questionnaire.

Who needs Medicare Supplements?

There are several instances when you should consider a Medicare Supplement plan. If you:

  • Travel abroad frequently and need insurance coverage for emergencies (a convenience that may not be provided by Original Medicare).
  • Receive hospital treatments all year long.
  • Require frequent doctor visits or medical care.
